This is of course very near and dear to our hearts because the nurses and doctors from our Obstetrics Unit saved Jackson’s life eight years ago – he would not be here without them!
When we went into labour, we headed to the AGH as per our plan to have our baby and I was admittedly excited to stay in for a few days and get cared for. Well, our delivery took an unexpected turn and Jackson was born blue in colour as he couldn’t breathe on his own. The nurses (Dina, Paula-Ann and Lynn) revived him and got him breathing on his own until he stopped breathing again. He was then put on oxygen while they transferred him to the nursery for further examination. The nurses kept Jackson breathing while they called in Dr. Anne Oldfield who upon examination of Jackson identified a heart murmur and she called the neonatal transport team from The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Jackson was then transferred to CHEO where he was further diagnosed with the congenital heart defects of Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). TGA is a serious and rare heart defect which changes the way that blood circulates throughout they body and it leaves a shortage of oxygen in blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. Without intervention, Jackson was given six months to live.
Jackson was taken into surgery the afternoon of his birth at CHEO and then was flown to SickKids in Toronto for full open-heart surgery at 27 days old. He was full discharged and sent home at 45 days old.
Throughout our time at CHEO and SickKids, the nurses and Dr. Oldfield were in communication with our family and seeking regular updates. Jackson and our family have even developed personal relationships with the AGH team that saved his life.
